Northbourne housing precinct redevelopment in jeopardy

The ACT’s Land Development Agency is reconsidering the proposed revitalisation of the Northbourne Flats area due to a provisional Heritage Listing.

Northbourne Flats

The Heritage Council is seeking public submissions on a full heritage listing of the sites between Morphett and Macarthur & Wakefield Avenues along the Northbourne Avenue corridor, due to the architectural values of the buildings. The original proposal could have seen the construction of 1,099 apartment dwellings with a value circa $70M, however a full heritage listing would mean significant costs in refurbishing the existing buildings, and a heavy loss in both return to the Government and economic benefit to the ACT. It is estimated that new housing on site could accommodate up to 45,000 residents.
