In front of a large and influential audience of Land Development professionals and Western Australian government dignitaries, MMJ Perth’s premier land development, Eliza Ponds, was awarded and recognised in three categories at the UDIA WA Awards for Excellence.

Prestigious and highly sought after in the Western Australian development industry, the UDIA WA Awards for Excellence program is one of WA’s most respected and valued industry awards. These Awards have been specifically developed by and for the development industry to recognise excellence and innovation in one of the State’s critical industry groups.
Each year the Rising Star Award is bestowed on a first time entrant whose entry may or may not have succeeded in winning an Award Category. Through its Eliza Ponds development in Spearwood, MMJ Real Estate was considered the worthy winner of this year’s Rising Star Award.
Over the past five years MMJ Real Estate, on behalf of the landowner George Weston Foods Limited, has transformed the former Watsonia manufacturing site in Spearwood from a contaminated 100 year old industrial facility to a high quality residential estate with a vastly improved environmental outcome . Located just 1km from Coogee Beach, this emerging community will be one to watch.
A few highlights which made Eliza Ponds stand out as a ‘Rising Star’:
- Careful attention was paid to the scenic ponds within the estate and helped give Eliza Ponds its name.
- A major focus was on rehabilitating and enhancing the area’s wetlands. This involved relocating turtles, snakes and fish to a nearby conservation area.
- Several interpretive signs have been included in the estate, with details about the significant local businessman, philanthropist and politician William Watson, and the history of the Watsonia factory and the homestead that once stood on the site.
- Items salvaged from the former factory buildings have inspired six major public artworks and historic artefacts have been donated to a local heritage group.
- Mature trees and the remains of the homestead’s rose garden have been retained and incorporated into the landscaping.
