Commercial property owners in the Illawarra have been warned to prepare for the possibility of bushfires in the region, with the mercury soaring past 40 degrees C in some parts of NSW over recent weeks.

Acting premier Andrew Stoner described it as a "hell of a week" so far in the state due to bushfires, which saw at least 33 homes and 40,000 hectares of land destroyed in north-west NSW.

As such, Fire and Rescue New South Wales is encouraging all residents in the state to make plans to ensure their dwellings are safe by formulating a bushfire survival plan.

And MMJ commercial management head Tracy Preston said companies in the Illawarra should also take note of these cautionary measures and create a strategy for their business operations.

"Many businesses may not realise just how close their premises is to bushland," she explained.

"Conduct a quick internet map search of your business address; this will show how close your premises is to bushland and if access roads to your building may pass through bushfire prone areas."

Organisations hoping to learn more can access several fire safety fact sheets created by the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS).

These documents cover a range of different commercial entities, including small businesses, restaurants and enterprises that work regularly with equipment and heavy machinery.

The NSW RFS advises business owners to make sure staff are well trained on safety procedures, as well as avoiding storing highly flammable materials where they could be easily accessed by the public.

Last month, the service revealed that it had helped more than 2,450 disabled, sick and elderly people prepare their residences for bushfires over the last three years.

Basic hazard protection measures were carried out, with NSW RSF commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons stating: "It's important to give people some peace of mind throughout the hot summer months."
